Chattanooga Realtors Join Regional Growth Planning Process

Yesterday the Greater Chattanooga Association of Realtors announced their full support of the Regional Growth Planning Process and made a $10,000 donation to support the efforts to create a 40-year growth plan for the region.

Per the Chattanoogan:
Members of the GCAR leadership met with County Mayor Jim Coppinger and Beth Jones, executive director of the Southeast Tennessee Development District, the lead regional organization helping to guide the process, to present a check for $10,000 in support of the effort. Many of the association’s large membership have also pledged their support of collective knowledge and experience in property matters to help guide the effort forward over the next few years that the planning stages are scheduled to take place.

SETAAAD Celebrates Literacy, Black History Month at Mary Walker Towers

This month, the Southeast Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability will be participating in Black History Month events at Mary Walker Towers.

Learning to read at the age of 100, Mary Walker left a legacy for all… Come celebrate literacy with the Mary Walker Towers, Howard School, Chattanooga News Chronicle, Southeast Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability, and the city of Chattanooga Department of Education, Arts & Culture on Monday-Friday, Feb. 20-24, from 3-4 p.m. Each day will feature: intergenerational readings, speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights leaders, stories and perspective of local leaders, and more culminating with a party on Friday. Free Training in February to Become a Medicare Counselor

Would you like to help seniors navigate the challenges of Medicare? In February, the Southeast Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability will host a FREE three-day training session for volunteers wishing to become certified Medicare counselors.
The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) trains volunteers to provide free and objective counsling and assistance.Topics covered will include understanding original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, differentiating between private insurance options, learning about programs for low-income people, and how to volunteer in your community.
After completing the training program, each volunteer is asked to commit to providing information counseling, consumer guidance, and community outreach each month throughout the 10 counties in Southeast Tennessee. SHIP locations are set up throughout the area, and counselors can choose a location that is convenient for him or her.

SETDD Receives USDA Rural Development Award

USDA Rural Development recently recognized the Southeast Tennessee Development District with an award as a Premier Partner for 2011.
"Rural Development partners with a lot of organizations, but we wanted to recognize the Southeast Tennessee Development District because they play a role in the economic development of our rural counties," explained David Collett, Chattanooga Area Director, USDA Rural Development.

Given on behalf of Bobby Goode, USDA Rural Development State Director for Tennessee, at the SETDD board meeting in December, the award stated:
The investment of time, capital and expertise by the Southeast Tennessee Development District staff has facilitated job creation and improved economic vitality and promise of the region by actively supporting new business and working with existing businesses to help them become more profitable. Further by working with local and state partners, they promote area growth through local projects aimed at improving water service throughout the area.
On receiving the award, SETDD’s Executive Director Beth Jones stated, “We accept the award with pleasure and appreciate the recognition not only of this critical partnership but also of the hard work of the staff of both of the agencies. It is our honor to be able to serve municipalities and counties in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia and work with this important partner.”
